SUMMARY (*)

For its weather and ecological characteristics the Chaco, broadly speaking, can be divided into three large environments or natural regions: the Eastern or Humid Chaco, the Central or Transitional Chaco and the Western or Dry Chaco. This division is especially connected with the reduction of precipitations, thus of the relative humidity, towards the west. This factor influences the waters distribution, accumulation and draining that associated with a relatively flat and low topography and slight local variations determine a mosaic of landscapes that reflect different vegetable physiognomies.

The Eastern Chaco, which is studied here, is marked by a greater rainfall, with registrations of 1,000 – 1,200 mm/year, which determines a rich variety of aquatic environments that alternate with drier ones. These aspects are imposed by the microrelieves and the water dynamics which are singularities that permit the differentiation of the following natural landscapes: Gallery Forest, Bosques or Montes Fuertes (forest/woodlands) with the following varieties: hydrophilic forest and climax forest, low open forest, savannah with palm trees, and marshes, gullies and ravines and lagoons.

Since 2 February, 2004 part of Eastern Chaco has been designated and registered as a Ramsar site known as Humedales Chaco (Chaco Wetlands) in the list of Convention on Wetlands or Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. It is a 508,000ha area covering part of the Paraná and Paraguay Rivers floodplain complex in the eastern border of San Fernando, 1º de Mayo and Bermejo districts.
